I think the argument is more that the thing you have more of and can't trade away is worth more than the thing you have less of because you have already traded some of it away.

But that doesn't make sense, because they're comparing 1 unit to 1 unit, not "all you've got" to "all you've got."

Yes, but one of the metrics for the one unit seems to be how may more it earns you total.
