I broke my glasses this morning.

I am very blind without my glasses.

Finding my back-up pair of glasses is difficult when I can't see (I'd already had my original pair shipped off to be repaired, so I couldn't use the standard masking tape temporary solution). Fortunately, I found my prescription swimming goggles, so I wore those so I could find my old glasses.

And I realized that I should really keep a pair of back-up glasses in my car. Because what if I was an hour's drive away from home when my glasses broke? I'd have to call someone to come out and fetch me, because driving without my glasses is the stuff that nightmares are made of. (I haven't had many nightmares since my middle school days, but I've probably had the blind driving one a half dozen times)

One cannot ship off eyeballs and hope for any kind of good outcome... nor is masking tape much help, and even if it were, you wouldn't have a spare set around in a drawer.

D'oh! It's good to have that backup pair around, as I found out when my original pair got broken in an "accident" involving a certain person who shall not be named :-)

My condolences on the broken glasses. There's a reason why it's often easier to ask DH where my glasses are than to search for them myself.

If you have to ask where your glasses are you aren't blind enough.

Mine are either: on my face, next to the shower, or on the bedside table. There are no other options (well maybe "in the bag at the pool"). Because how would I walk anywhere else to put them somewhere else?

Yes, but when I stumbled into the shower, did I leave them on the bedside table, or bring them into th bathroom?

My new pair are those next-to-invisible titanium frame ones, so usually I have to find them by feel, even if they are where I expect them to be.

I usually wear contacts, and I'm also deathly afraid of losing them or losing one and suddenly being unable to see. I usually just carry around a spare pair of glasses all the time. I should also start carrying around a spare pair of contacts for the days I decide to wear glasses. :-)

Where did you get prescription swimming goggles? I was thinking I would like some of those...

On the rare occasions when I've needed to find my glasses (every 36 months or so I put them outside the standard places arcanology listed) I just close my eyes because I know they can't hover in midair, and it's easier to search with my hands than be frustrated that I can't actually see anything.

MIT optical has prescription goggles up to 8 diopters. Of course, my prescription is higher than that, but I figured, hey, 8 diopters worth of correction is better than zero.

A long time ago I also once got a prescription face mask for snorkeling/scuba diving, where they basically take huge glass lenses and glue them into a regular facemask. It is amusing to see how thick my glasses would have been back in the day before all those high tech lens materials were developed...

I got a pair at City Sports, I think. They only go up to 6 diopters, though, but that's good enough for me. And they only do diopter numbers, not the other one, so while my goggles don't correct for my astigmatism, it does mean I can make out the black line at the bottom of my lane at the pool.

Have you considered the "fix your eyesight" surgery? I have (so far) decided on "thanks but no thanks" because my prescription is so mild (~2.5) that the slight risk did not seem worth it. But, I'm able to swim, go running, etc. sans glasses -- and driving would be ok.

I have considered it... but I've had glasses since 2nd grade. At this point, they really feel totally natural to me. And I've asked my optometrist about lasik type stuff, and his answer was that he personally advises against it because there are non-negligible possibilities of picking up minor but annoying traits like "dry eye" or something like that.

So I'll probably think about it again in 5 years.

Or, given my family history, I'll start getting mild glaucoma when I'm 70 and in correcting that they'll fix my eyesight in the process.

If you've got to wear your goggles in public, might as well complete the look. Lab coat, colander for a hat, screwdrivers in your shirt pocket and crazed grin on your face.

Really, if you get stranded somewhere due to a glasses accident, you should just hold the telephone very close to your face and call one of us to come pick you up. None of this driving around without looking stuff.
