Haircuts

I'm giving a talk next week where there will be lots of people who I might want to ask for jobs one day. And I need a haircut. And I thought to myself, maybe I want a haircut that looks better than the ones I get at Supercuts. So where do the guys on my friends list go when they want a nice haircut?

Wait...there are places other than SuperCuts? :-)

[identity profile] marcusmarcusrc.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have certainly heard rumors of these mystical places known as "barbershops".

Yeah, I go to one of those these days, but it's a long way for you to travel for a haircut and generally my cuts were better at Supercuts. Yeah, I know, I should find a new place to go. I also cut hair, well just my boys' hair, and it's also a long way to travel for just an okay haircut. :-)

You need to talk to the guys not on your friends list.

Also not in your profession.

Um, go hang around Newbury Street and ask anyone who looks really annoying where they go. ;)

What are you saying about my friends???

Though you might have a point. I guess I could go across the street to Sloan-land, Sloanies are that type of person, and they are a lot closer than Newbury street.

Aww, but your haircuts are always so cute and fuzzy! <3

I think my advice to you is to not try an unknown quantity a week before you really care what it looks like. A known "ok" haircut might be safer.

[identity profile] marcusmarcusrc.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:36 am (UTC)(link)

Supercuts isn't really a "known" quantity, since different people attack my hair every time I go. So the same instructions often yield different results. Admittedly, given my hair, they don't usually go _too_ wrong...

I go to my mom, which is very little help to you. (ok, so I'm not a guy, but given that my ideal haircut is "cut every hair to the same length" I'm looking more for the same sort of barber you are than you might think.)

Robert goes to a barbershop in Davis Square and seems to have good results now that he's smacked them down about the comb-over thing. (He never asked them for a comb-over, I swear). As far as I can tell he's been going to the same barbershop since the early 90s.

You'd have to email him to find out which one; I can never remember.

I use Louise at MK Hair Studios in One Kendall Square and she
seems to do a consistently good job. I've been less happy
with the results when I've gone elsewhere.

I'm lazy, so I go to whichever place is closest to my apartment. That happens to be Mario's Salon, which isn't cheap but does a decent job. The various barbershops around Davis also seem to be okay.

What variations are you thinking of on your hair? More volume? I'm not really picturing anything different, unless you straighten out your hair.... :-)

[identity profile] marcusmarcusrc.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 10:27 am (UTC)(link)

Nah, I don't really want something different, I just want what I usually get done right. The little things like the transition from top to sides, and how the back is tapered, etc. etc.

I second Mario's in Davis, but of course, I'm a girl so I'm not sure about their guys cuts.

Judy Jetson's on Mass Ave. Ask for David. He'll make you look fabulous.

i have at least 1 male friend who has gone to Judy Jetson's (near Porter) and gotten a really good haircut. when i still lived in Boston i personally went to Andy at Salon Luna (also near Porter) and miss him terribly, but the couple of people who recommended him to me were also female, so i don't have any male evidence of goodness for you.

You don't want me to answer this, do you?

Haircuts? Every now and then I get Johanna to trim my ends.... I think my last for-pay haircut was probably about 10 years ago.

My family has a haircutter person that we're loyal to at home. She sent my brother off to college with a card in haircutterese that says what to do with his hair, and he hands it to the guy in the Student Center basement.

When I'm at school, Ting Ting cuts my hair.

look, i don't see why you want to cut off your hair anyway. you're going to go bald in the near future, so you might as well enjoy the hair while you have it.

(i'm kidding, by the way... but i do think your hair's uncomplicated enough that supercuts should be fine. by the way, there's one near my house now... come visit me!)
