Report on North Carolina
Dec. 6th, 2007 02:14 pmMy first visit to the state of North Carolina was a pleasant one. A few highlights:
The Research Triangle Park area, home to the 2nd highest concentration of PhDs in the country after Cambridge (according to multiple sources who may have been slightly defensive about living in the South), is quite... "crunchy". The grocery store was full of organic foods and exotic fruits and vegetables.
People working at the EPA (they have a major research arm in RTP) practically exude relief that they can finally talk about climate change now that the Supreme Court has ruled that CO2 is a pollutant. Though they are still frustrated with the administrative mandates restricting movement on a whole host of pollutants (lead, PM, etc. etc.).
I didn't have to wear my giant winter jacket for the entire week! Also the region is full of pretty trees. Not so walkable as a result, but I successfully managed to take public transit most places.
Oddly, I think I have as many friends in NC as I have in any other urban area outside of Boston (other competitors include DC, Seattle, and London, I think)
Next up: leaving for San Francisco on Sunday for the AGU conference. Maybe my life will settle down when I get back.
And at some point I'll post an update on my job hunt...
